This week we continued hamlet. We do Advice from Polonious which told us the advice polonious gave to his son then he was sent off to college. This helps us understand that people back then had the same values that we have today. We finished out Act 1 of Hamlet. In scene 5 Hamlet actually talks to his fathers ghost. He father ghost tells him that he must kill Claudius with out effecting his mother. Hamlet and his two best friends made an oath that they would take care of Claudius and avenge the former Kings. We started act 2 and this is when Hamlet comes up with a plan to take care of Claudius. Hamlet decides that he is going to put on a play representing the murder of his father.
This week we had ACT and it was actually a lot harder than I thought. The time is what got me on the Reading portion. I only finished 2 of the prompts and was forced to guess on the all the last questions. You must read very fast when taking the ACT. Almost skim it so that you will have enough time. The English portion was fairly easy. It was one of the tests that I did finish along with Math. All you have to do on the English test is find the grammar that is correct and a lot of the problems had answers that were easily eliminated. The ACT is a test of time. It time how well you are under pressure and how fast you can problem solve. I do not feel that it is an accurate way of testing someone intelligence. The Writing portion was timed also but we had an easy prompts about sports. It was quite easy to display my arguments within the time given.
We just started watching a classic by Shakespeare called Hamlet. It is about a prince that lost his father, the king, and now has his uncle in his place. Hamlet knows that his Uncle has killed his father but no one else knows. His mother marries his uncle only months after his fathers death. Hamlet feels betrayed by his mother and everyone around him. Hamlet must find a way to eliminate his Uncle Claudius without getting convicted of treason or harming his mother in the process. This will be a hard task because treason results in death.
This week we had a Hamlet expert come in and tell us all about hamlet. She explained the ending very well and gave an explanation for everything. We saw the ending of hamlet and took in the true meaning of Shakespeare and his writing. He makes everything ironic and connect through out. Shakespeare love tragedy and that is what he is best at. Probably the best of all time. Hamlet fights laureates and then the king poisons the mother trying to poison hamlet. Then laureates scratches hamlet with his sword, then laureates falls off balcony. Hamlet kills the king and hamlet dies from the scratch.
This week Ive was only here a few days so I didn't really get everything. We watched more hamlet and things are starting to make sense with the movie. Hamlets world is spinning and everything is going crazy. I actually learned that hamlet is actually a little more crazy than I thought with the killing of his girlfriends father. We did some ACT prep this week and I learned what a good essay looks like and what a bad one looks like. A good essay should keep on topic and use good language, not repeating itsself.
http://www.actstudent.org/testprep/tips/writing-test.html This week we did a lot with the pardoners tale. We made video retelling of the story and I learned a lot about video editing . I didn't know anything about editing a video before and now with the help of Wevideo I made, in my opinion, a very good video retelling the pardoners tale. I added music in and even my voice. I constructed everything to sync with the music smoothly. We watch all of the videos made by the class so i revised the pardoners tale a good 20 times. After the first reading the story wasn't very clear to me but now i really understand the meaning and all the elements that go into this tale. I think it was fun making this video and being able to learn how to use Wevideo. Like I said before this was my first time doing video editing.
This 6 weeks I actually started reading this book that I really like. I feel like I'm becoming a faster reader. I've learned that you can read faster if you really focus on what you are reading even if it feels like you are skimming the page if you focus the you can pick out all the info you need to under stand and comprehend what you are reading. I also learned how styles of reading and writing differ. We have been reading poetry and it really has a deeper meaning wit in the words that you have to think about. I tried writing some poetry in my creative writing and its fun because you can instill meaning with out explain it.
This week I learned a lot about the structure of many of the popular movies and novels. The movies and novel follow a structure that works for many stories. Really people enjoy the same thing over and over. They want to see a hero rise from nothing and go on an adventure to later receive a reward. I feel like we truly want this to be us. I really enjoyed Star Wars: The New Hope and it fit perfectly in the Heroes Journey graphic organizer. This proved to be true with Harry Potter and the Hunger Games. The heroes journey consists to the Call, which is the call for the adventure the hero will go on, the threshold which is the guardian who helps the hero on his journey, the challenges which and the challenges that the hero faces on his journey, then we have the abyss which is the main action where the hero faces death, the transformation where the hero is starting to find his true self, the revelation where the hero has the has a new way of thinking forever, the atonement where the hero find ones self and is comfortable with the change, and finally the change there the hero is gifted something and has a completely different view on life. This is the heroes journey, it applies to almost every hero novel or movie. This is what makes a good story.
